On June 21, 2025, Split officially welcomed a new urban oasis along its coastline – the fully renovated Znjan Beach and promenade. This project stands as one of the most significant infrastructural and urban developments in the recent history of Split and the entire Dalmatian region. The transformation has turned this area into a modern, multifunctional hub for social, recreational, and cultural life in the city.
How Did It All Begin? The History of Znjan
The history of Znjanis marked by transformation. In the past, the area was dominated by vineyards and fields, while the coastal section remained a natural shoreline. The first major changes began in 1971, during the development of the Split 3 district, when excavated material was deposited in Znjan. A defining moment for further development came in 1998, just before Pope John Paul II’s visit to Split, when the plateau was leveled and expanded to accommodate a large gathering of the faithful. For the first time, Znjan became a broader public space open to citizens.
Znjan Beach is Much More Than a Beach
Today’s Znjan is far more than an ordinary city beach – it is Split’s new living room, intended for all generations, both locals and tourists. The new project, valued at over 45 million euros (excluding VAT), was financed from the city budget, with support from a loan from the European Investment Bank and funds from the Integrated Territorial Program (ITP). The conceptual design was created by architect Ante Kuzmanic and his team.
The new Znjan area covers a remarkable 168,000 square meters, including 48,000 m² of landscaped green areas, more than 800 trees, and 13,000 shrubs. In addition to the impressive 1.5-kilometer promenade, visitors can enjoy numerous additional facilities: sports fields, playgrounds, an amphitheater, stages for cultural events, hospitality venues, children’s playrooms, cycling paths, fountains, and diving boards—all part of the diverse offering.
Special attention has been given to accessibility—the entire space is adapted for people with disabilities, while the traffic infrastructure has been enhanced with a new underground garage offering 530 parking spaces, as well as an additional 451 surface parking spots.
A Year-Round Living Room – For All Generations and Guests
Znjan is not just a summer destination for swimming; it has been designed as a multifunctional space for activities throughout the year. The seafront promenade provides the perfect setting for morning runs or evening strolls, while the sports fields offer recreational opportunities for all ages—from beach volleyball, basketball, and football to rollerblading and cycling.
Numerous amenities are provided for the youngest visitors: children’s playgrounds, inflatable water slides in the sea, fountains, and playrooms. The new diving boards and playgrounds are especially popular, providing hours of entertainment for children and young people. The growing number of hospitality venues offers a varied selection of food and beverages, while the shade from canopies provides relief during the hottest summer days.
In addition to local residents, Znjan is increasingly attracting foreign tourists. Many compare it to popular European destinations such as Malta, Mallorca, or Valencia, but often point out the unique purity and beauty of Split’s sea. International guests praise the warmth of the hosts, the variety of activities, and the pleasant atmosphere, often noting that they feel both welcome and safe here.
The New Center of Split’s Social Life
The opening of the Znjan plateau was marked by a major public event and a rich cultural-entertainment program under the slogan “Summer at Znjan – for all tastes and generations,” which will run until the end of July 2025. The City of Split has ensured strict noise control, and organizers are required to adhere to prescribed levels to preserve the quality of life for residents in the surrounding area.
With the new Znjan, Split has gained a modern and attractive center that connects the city with the sea in a manner befitting the 21st century. The project not only represents an urban transformation but also a strong tourism and economic stimulus for the entire region. The area is open to everyone—citizens, visitors, recreationalists, families, and athletes alike.
Conclusion: Znjan Beach – A New Vision of an Urban Beach
The renovated Znjan Beach is a prime example of successful public space transformation, evolving from a concrete wasteland into a modern, green center of social life. Facilities for all age groups, accessibility, environmental care, and high safety standards make it one of the most beautiful beaches on the Mediterranean. Here, the sea, sun, and city life merge, creating a unique atmosphere for enjoyment throughout the year.
Znjan is now much more than just a place for swimming—it is an open-air living room, a meeting point, a space for recreation, entertainment, and relaxation for locals and tourists alike. With this project, Split has added another landmark to the Mediterranean tourist map, and Znjan is becoming a symbol of a modern, open, and green city of the future.
